What is Life Coaching? How to Reach Your Potential With a Life Coach
Have you ever wondered if there could be more to your life than what you are experiencing right now? More purpose or meaning or fulfilment? Have you heard people talk about having a “life coach” and wondered what is life coaching really?
Coaching is now the second fastest growing industry in the world. More and more people are turning to coaching above all other services to get what they want most in life because of how effective it is in getting rapid results and helping people to reach their potential.
So what IS life coaching, and what can a life coach do for me?
Life coaching is a safe space, free from judgement or bias, where you are fully supported and encouraged to take tangible steps towards what it is you want to create in your life.
Life coaching fundamentally is helping people find the answers and solutions that are already inside them. Every solution to every problem we have relating to our health, our mind, our body can be found inside of us. Every single solution.
Your life coach will help you navigate through thought provoking and creative questions, conversations and processes to allow you discover what’s going on, to entertain possibilities, and to shift your mindset to realising your potential.
The main purpose of life coaching is to empower you to become solution focused and to make changes and take consistent action so you progress towards your goal or vision.
And having a life coach means you always have someone who will hold you accountable and to make sure you’re not settling for less that you are capable of. To make sure you are fulfilling your potential.
Your life coach’s number one goal is to get you to a place where you are making progress. Consistent progress. Life coaching will support you to feel seen, heard and understood by someone who is always in your corner, always supporting you, and is 100% dedicated to your progress.
Accountability is absolutely key to sustaining your progress! Having a coach who is 100% dedicated to your progress will ensure that you follow through on taking action, stick to your strategies and continue to make amazing things happen!
What is the difference between life coaching and therapy?
- Coaching is PRESENT and FUTURE focused
- Therapy is (mostly) PAST and PRESENT focused
To help further clarify life coaching, it’s important to understand what is life coaching and is not life coaching:
⇒ Coaching is all about moving you forward
⇒ Coaching is action and solution focused.
⇒ Coaching is about getting you from Point A to Point B
⇒ Coaching is helping you to dream big, get out of your comfort zone and really reach your potential
⇒ Coaching is helping you to: set goals, identify any challenges / obstacles / negative patterns, create good systems and habits; and feel empowered to take action
⇒ Coaching is about helping you to cultivate a mindset for growth
⊗ Coaching is not therapy
⊗ Coaching is not counselling
⊗ Coaching is not a sounding board for you to offload your problems
⊗ Coaching is not about dealing with deep trauma or treating mental illness
⊗ Coaching not problem focused.
What is life coaching…is it a silver bullet to achieving my goals, or does it require me to actually do some work?
To progress and grow, we need to take committed and consistent action. Key to the success of your coaching journey is your willingness to show up and be authentic, and to perform any actions as agreed between you and your coach.
It is important to remember that getting results and creating lasting and meaningful change requires effort, so you get back what you put in. You have to be willing and ready to do the work required to make empowering changes in your life. Your coach’s role is to encourage and challenge you to make these changes, but your coach will not do the work for you.
What makes a great coach?
- A great coach will have excellent training, knowledge and experience in change-work and behaviour.
- A great coach has a history of creating results in their own life.
- A great coach “walks their talk”, they live the principles of coaching in their everyday life.
- A great coach knows that mastering your mindset is key to your progress and is the “secret” ingredient to all transformation.

I have achieved some great results in my life, would I still get the benefits of life coaching?
Yes, definitely! I fully believe that we are all capable of way more than we believe. Even if you have created amazing success in your life, there is always an opportunity to grow and develop or ‘up-level’ that success.
Regardless of where you are in your professional or personal life, coaching will enhance your existing situation, encourage a growth mindset and help you maintain consistency – the key to all results. Life can get so busy and distracting that even the most committed person can come off track at times.
Shifting your mindset is key to your progress. All the very best tools, strategies and advice on planet earth will not get you anywhere….if you are not tackling them with the right mindset.
What happens in a life coaching session?
Your coaching sessions are all about YOU. You are the number one focus and your coach is literally there to help you reach where you want to want to be.
The sessions themselves are thought provoking questions, conversations and processes to help you to get clarity, to challenge you, to hold you accountable, to guide you. At the end of every session, you will be setting specific action steps that you can take to move you forward.
It’s less about your coach giving you advice, and more about your coach guiding the sessions so that you can find your own answers. Your coach might offer suggestions, tools, or alternative options or ideas, or prompt you to explore things further, but ultimately it’s about helping you come up with your own solutions and actions.
Will I need coaching forever?
How long you engage the support of a coach is really up to you. The goal of coaching is to empower you to take charge of your decisions, your behaviour, your goals etc…so that you can go forth and progress towards your ideal life vision. Coaching will move you towards independence so that you can eventually identify and implement the changes you need on your own. In this sense, the support you will need will likely taper off after a time.
The length of time this takes varies from person to person however we recommend working with a coach for at least 12 months so that you develop traction and momentum with your changes and strategies.
How do I find the right coach for me?
It is important to choose a coach who is the right fit for you. A good coach will want the very best results possible for you and will understand that the coach / client relationship is key to this success. They will consider this a high priority and will not accept everyone into their program: they will have a selection process to determine if the relationship is mutually aligned.
